Upper Back & Neck Pain Treatment in Plymouth

Is neck or upper back pain making it impossible to work, drive or sleep comfortably?Start Fixing Your Neck Pain

Pain and stiffness in the upper back and neck is something we see every single day — and it's no surprise. Between long hours at desks, time spent looking at screens, and the tension that stress creates, the muscles, joints and nerves of the upper spine take a constant battering.

For some people it's a dull, nagging ache that's just always there. For others it's a sudden sharp pain that stops them turning their head, or headaches that creep up from the base of the skull. Whatever your experience, this area responds very well to the right treatment.

At KS Sports Therapy in Plymouth, we don't just treat the area that hurts — we find out why it's hurting and address the root cause so it doesn't keep coming back.

    Common Causes

Prolonged screen use and desk work with poor posture
Sleeping in an awkward position or on an unsupportive pillow
Stress and tension held in the neck and shoulder muscles
    Sudden movements or whiplash-type injuries
Weakness in the deep neck and upper back stabilising muscles
Stiff thoracic spine reducing movement through the whole upper body
Referred pain from the lower cervical spine

    Symptoms to Look Out For

Stiffness and restricted movement when turning or tilting the head
Aching or burning across the upper back and between the shoulder blades
Headaches originating from the base of the skull or behind the eyes
Pain or tingling that radiates into the shoulder, arm or hand
Muscle knots and trigger points that are tender to touch
Pain that worsens after sitting for long periods or after waking

    What Can Help?

For neck and upper back pain that has come on recently, gentle movement is usually more helpful than keeping still. Slow, controlled neck movements — carefully turning your head from side to side and gently tilting it — can help prevent stiffness from setting in. Applying heat to the neck and upper back can ease muscle tension, particularly if stress or posture is a contributing factor.

Checking your workspace setup can make an immediate difference — screen height, chair position and how you hold your phone are among the most common contributors we see. Where stress is a factor, even brief periods of conscious relaxation and breathing can help reduce the muscular tension that feeds into neck pain.

What tends to make it worse: sustained screen use without breaks, sleeping on your front, carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder, and sudden unguarded movements.

When to seek professional help: you're welcome to book in as soon as you want to — you don't need to have been in pain for a specific amount of time before coming to see us. If your neck pain has been present for more than a week or two without improvement, is causing headaches, or is producing any tingling or numbness into the arm or hand, an assessment can help identify what's actually driving the problem and the most effective way to address it.

    Conditions We Treat

    Neck Pain & Stiffness

Whether it came on gradually or appeared overnight, neck pain and stiffness is almost always treatable. We assess the joints, muscles and nerves of the cervical spine to identify what's driving the problem and get you moving freely again.

    Cervicogenic Headaches

Headaches that originate from the neck are called cervicogenic headaches. They're often mistaken for tension headaches or migraines, but they respond well to manual therapy targeting the upper cervical joints and surrounding musculature.

    Thoracic Spine Stiffness

Stiffness through the mid and upper back is incredibly common in those who sit for long periods. It limits movement through the whole upper body and is often a contributing factor in shoulder and neck problems. Mobilisation and exercise make a significant difference.

    Nerve Pain & Referred Symptoms

When nerves in the neck are compressed or irritated — by a disc bulge, joint stiffness or muscular tightness — pain, tingling or numbness can travel into the shoulder, arm or hand. We assess the source of the irritation and treat accordingly.

Upper Trapezius & Levator Scapulae Tension

The muscles that run from the neck to the top of the shoulder are notorious for carrying stress and tension. Persistent tightness here contributes to headaches, restricted movement and referred pain. Sports massage and dry needling are particularly effective for these.

    How We Treat It

Treatment for upper back and neck pain is highly individual, but typically involves a combination of manual therapy to restore joint movement and reduce muscle tension, dry needling to release deep trigger points, and corrective exercise to address the postural patterns and muscle weaknesses that are keeping the problem going. We'll also look at your workspace setup, sleep position and daily habits — because the best treatment in the world won't hold if you're going back to the same patterns every day. Treatment may include Sports Massage, Dry Needling, Corrective Exercise, Lifestyle & Habit Optimisation.

For those who have had or are facing cervical spine surgery, we can support both the preparation and recovery phases. In our experience, patients who engage with pre-operative rehabilitation tend to recover more smoothly, and post-operative rehab can be a key part of restoring full movement and confidence after neck procedures.

    What to Expect

We'll start by understanding your full picture — when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to. After a thorough movement and neurological assessment, we'll share our findings clearly and agree a plan together. Most patients with neck and upper back pain see significant improvement within three to five sessions. We'll give you things to work on between appointments so your recovery continues every day, not just when you're with us.

    Real Neck Pain Recovery

    Years of Tension Headaches →
    GONE after 4 sessions!

"I'd suffered with tension headaches for years, occurring 1-2 times a week, for hours each time. Kyle's assessment confirmed a stiff neck and upper back muscles were a likely root cause, due to a lifestyle of constant laptop work, long hours driving, and little-no exercise or stretching. From the first treatment I could feel the increase of blood flow to my head instantly. Since then, with repeated treatment sessions and detailed guidance on stretches and exercises to increase my muscle strength and tolerance from home, I'm no longer keeping track of them at all. Can't recommend highly enough!"
