    Cupping Therapy in Plymouth

Cupping therapy has been used for thousands of years — and has seen a significant resurgence in modern clinical practice, partly because it works, and partly because we now have a much better understanding of why.

At KS Sports Therapy in Plymouth, cupping is used as a targeted treatment tool for reducing muscle tension, improving blood flow and addressing areas of tissue restriction that respond well to decompression rather than direct pressure — making it a valuable complement to other hands-on techniques.

It is particularly effective for deep muscular tension that has built up over time and proved difficult to shift through massage alone.

    What It Involves

Silicone or plastic cups are applied to the skin and create a gentle vacuum that lifts the underlying soft tissue. This decompression effect separates the tissue layers, increases local blood flow, reduces muscle tension and can have a significant effect on areas of chronic tightness. Cups may be left static over specific areas or moved slowly across the skin — known as gliding cupping — to cover a broader region. The sensation is unusual but generally comfortable, and most patients find it deeply relaxing.

    What It Helps With

Deep muscular tension in the back, shoulders and legs
Fascial restrictions contributing to reduced movement
Recovery from training and physical exertion
Areas of chronic tightness that haven't responded well to direct pressure techniques
Neck and upper trapezius tension contributing to headaches
Hip and gluteal tightness affecting lower limb movement

Cupping leaves characteristic circular marks on the skin that range from light pink to a deep reddish-purple, depending on the level of tissue tension in the treated area. These marks are not bruises — they are a response to the increased circulation in the tissue — and typically fade within three to seven days. We'll always discuss this beforehand so you know what to expect. Cupping is combined with other treatment techniques within your appointment and is never used in isolation.

Is This Treatment Right for Me?

Cupping is suitable for most people with muscular tension, tightness or fascial restriction, and is used across our full patient population — from athletes looking to speed up recovery to those dealing with chronic back and shoulder pain from desk-based work. If you have certain skin conditions, take blood thinning medication or are pregnant, we'll discuss suitability during your assessment. Alternatives are always available.
