IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation) in Plymouth

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation — or IASTM — is a hands-on treatment technique that uses specially designed tools to assess and treat restrictions in the body's soft tissues. It is particularly effective for areas of scar tissue, fascial tightness and chronic tissue dysfunction that have proved resistant to other approaches.

At KS Sports Therapy in Plymouth, we use IASTM as a targeted clinical tool — applied precisely where assessment shows it will make the biggest difference, always as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

In our experience, it can be one of the more useful tools for stimulating a fresh healing response in tissue that has become stuck in a chronic state.

    What It Involves

Smooth, bevelled instruments are used to apply controlled pressure to the skin and underlying soft tissues in the affected area. This stimulates blood flow, breaks down dysfunctional scar tissue or fascial adhesions, and promotes a fresh healing response in tissue that may have become stuck in a chronic state. The technique can feel intense over particularly affected areas, but is well-tolerated by most patients and is followed by appropriate stretching and movement to reinforce the work done.

    What It Helps With

Scar tissue and adhesions following injury or surgery
Tendinopathy where fascial restriction is contributing to the problem
Plantar fasciitis and restricted ankle mobility
IT band tightness and lateral knee pain
Shoulder and forearm restriction limiting movement and performance
Chronic soft tissue problems that have not responded to massage alone

What to Expect in Your Session

    Assess

    Treat

    Recover

IASTM is always applied following a thorough assessment to identify the areas of tissue restriction. Some redness and mild bruising can occur following treatment — this is a normal response and indicates increased circulation to the treated area. Sessions are typically 15 to 30 minutes in duration and are combined with other treatment techniques within your appointment. We'll explain what we're doing and monitor your response closely throughout.

Is This Treatment Right for Me?

IASTM is particularly effective for those with persistent soft tissue problems, post-surgical scarring or chronic tendon and fascial restrictions that have proved resistant to other approaches. It is used across a broad range of patients — from athletes managing overuse injuries to those with long-standing restrictions following surgery or trauma. We'll always assess whether it's appropriate for your specific situation before using it.
