Dry Needling in Plymouth
Dry needling is a highly effective clinical technique used to treat muscular pain, tension and trigger points. Despite using a fine needle, it has nothing to do with acupuncture — it is based entirely on Western musculoskeletal medicine and targets specific areas of muscular dysfunction with precision.
At KS Sports Therapy in Plymouth, dry needling is used as part of a broader treatment plan — specifically where we identify it as the most effective way to address deep muscular tension that is contributing to your pain or limiting your recovery.
It is particularly useful for reaching areas that hands-on massage simply can't access as effectively.
What It Involves
A very fine, sterile needle is inserted directly into a trigger point — a hyperirritable spot within a muscle that causes local pain or refers pain to other areas. The needle provokes a local twitch response in the muscle, which releases the trigger point, reduces tension and stimulates the body's natural healing response. The procedure is brief and, while you may feel a dull ache or a brief twitch sensation, it is generally well-tolerated and often provides rapid relief from muscular pain and tightness.

Dry needling is always carried out following a thorough assessment to ensure it's appropriate for you. The needles are very fine and single-use. You may feel a brief twitch sensation or a dull ache during the procedure — this is a positive sign that the trigger point has been reached. Sessions typically involve needling alongside other treatment techniques. Some patients experience mild post-treatment soreness in the treated area for 24 to 48 hours, similar to the feeling after a deep massage.
Is This Treatment Right for Me?
Dry needling is suitable for most people with muscular pain or tension, including those who haven't responded as well as expected to massage alone. It's used across the full spectrum of our patients — from athletes dealing with training-related muscle tightness to desk workers with chronic neck and shoulder tension. We'll always discuss the technique with you beforehand and only proceed if you're comfortable. If you have a needle phobia or certain medical conditions, we'll find equally effective alternatives.
