    Electrotherapy in Plymouth

Electrotherapy is an umbrella term for a range of clinically proven modalities that use electrical stimulation to reduce pain, promote tissue healing and support rehabilitation. Used correctly, it can make a meaningful difference to recovery speed and pain levels — particularly in the early stages of injury.

At KS Sports Therapy in Plymouth, electrotherapy is used selectively and purposefully — only where our assessment indicates it will add specific value alongside hands-on treatment and exercise.

We never use it as a default or a time-filler — every treatment decision we make is based on what the evidence and your individual assessment supports.

    What It Involves

The specific electrotherapy modality used will depend on your condition and what we're trying to achieve. Commonly used approaches include TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) for pain modulation, ultrasound therapy to promote tissue healing in tendons and ligaments, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to assist in muscle activation during rehabilitation. All modalities are comfortable to receive and are carefully selected and applied based on your individual assessment.

    What It Helps With

Acute soft tissue injuries where promoting tissue healing is a priority
Tendon and ligament injuries requiring targeted tissue stimulation
Pain modulation in both acute and chronic pain presentations
Muscle inhibition following injury or surgery where activation is difficult
Swelling and oedema management in the early stages of injury
Supporting rehabilitation where other techniques alone are insufficient

What to Expect in Your Session

    Assess

    Recover

Electrotherapy is comfortable and non-invasive. Depending on the modality being used, you may feel a mild tingling, warming or pulsing sensation. Sessions are typically 10 to 20 minutes in duration and are integrated into your broader appointment alongside other treatment techniques. We'll explain which modality we're using and why, and monitor your response throughout.

Is This Treatment Right for Me?

Electrotherapy is appropriate for a wide range of patients and conditions, though there are certain contraindications — including pacemakers, certain metal implants and pregnancy — that we'll always screen for during your assessment. If you've used electrotherapy before and found it helpful, or if you've not responded as well as expected to hands-on treatment alone, it may be a valuable addition to your plan. We'll always make treatment decisions based on what the evidence and your individual assessment supports.
